Pine River is designed for 36 students, ages 13 – 19. Most of them will have a history of:

• serious drug and alcohol problems

• family conflict

• defiance

• lack of motivation

• depression

• thoughts of suicide

These are the kids who, if they make it to school at all, hang out at the edge of the school property. If they are even in class, they are either asleep, or disruptive. They are not able to function in a normal school environment.

Most will have experienced a number of interventions: counselling, individual psychotherapy, family therapy, medical intervention, day treatment, or short term residential programs. These youth will not have responded to these less intensive interventions, and continue to spiral down.

I couldn’t find a reason to get out of bed anymore or if there was any hope for me to ever live a better life than the one I was living…I look at it as one of the most emotional times and the key to my happiness. It helped me deal with issues I didn’t even realize existed, I got through many negative experiences that I had just thrown to the back of my mind and thought had disappeared but they were really adding up and affecting how I was on a day to day basis because of them.
