Position: Wilderness Field Instructor
Reports to: Program Manager
Department: OLE
Location: Algonquin Park (South River, Ontario)
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
•Working an agreed upon rotating shift pattern, being responsible for the health and safety of 2 other staff and up to 8 students, in a wilderness situation.
•Monitoring general safety of entire group, and specific well being of up to 4 students. Specific monitoring includes:
oDocumentation of daily food and water intake
oDocumentation/monitoring of any concerns regarding food and water, ie.hydration, excretion, food dumping or purging.
oTwice daily checks of student’s hands, feet and faces with an eye towards noticing, preventing and caring for blisters, minor cuts, dryness and cracking, and cold or wet injuries. Documentation of checks, findings, and actions taken.
oA demonstrated understanding of perceived vs. real risk.
oOngoing management of group with safety as primary intention.
•Organize, lead and participate in daily student activities, including:
oSupervision of daily life routines
oGroup therapy activities
oSkills teaching and support.
oTutoring and assistance with reading and writing assignments.
oFood preparation and clean up.
oRecreation and fun time activities.
•One on one mentoring of up to 4 students, including:
oDaily check in: monitoring progress in program, emotional state, student needs.
o2 one on one session's per shift focusing on therapeutic progress and emotional needs.
oDaily record keeping for individual students.
oDevelopment of student action plans.
•Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students through:
oParticipation in and facilitation of group meetings and discussions.
oCoordination of daily travel and recreational activities.
•Contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary therapeutic team to evaluate student progress and plan individual plan modifications as required.
•Help ensure the therapeutic goals of the program in general and the individual therapeutic plan for the students are realized.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
•WFR or WEMT with experience managing backcountry medical issues
•Minimum Bronze Cross Certification with NLS preferred.
•B.A., B.Sc, or college diploma in related field
•Experience working with at-risk youth and young adults in a wilderness setting.
•Valid Drivers License an asset
